Painted Cats

My sister sent me these photos. Apparently it can cost up to $15,000 for the work to be done, not to mention years and years of psychotherapy required to figure out what's wrong with the owners to have this done in the first place.

I love cats as much as the next guy, but this is just crossing the line.

Behold, the painted cat.

you may need to take a cold shower.

ok, so it's fake. whatever. Snopes.

Ninja Stalker

Everyone, and i mean everyone knows that cats are expert stalkers. It's how they hunt their prey. They have retractable claws which means they can walk on floors without making a sound, unlike dogs.

So, I'm sure it's evident to the cat that they are quite silent whilst walking, as it is part of their evolutionary heritage. Fully taking advantage of this feature, this cat takes it a step further. Perhaps his camoflauge doesn't really work so well inside, but he only moves when the camera is off of him. Enjoy.

Rivals

Seems to be another Chicago* based blog with the same name as this one, more or less. I suppose i'm the new kid on the block so maybe i should yield...i don't think I will. Warning: poorly designed banners ahead.

Maru, the Diet Cola Cat

Another Japanese Gem found by my research assistant.

This fella has is own gosh darn BLOG for god's sake. he's automatically cooler than you or me. His vids are insanely popular, as evidenced by the medals "awarded" to him by youtube, and the number of views he's gotten. Plenty of other videos from this user too, so i'll probably cover some in future posts.

This video is remarkable for many reasons, the first and foremost being that this cat (although a bit on the hefty side) is extremely cute. His swirly grey coat is exotic and the way his legs splay out as he rams head first into the container often face-planting on the wall/table/whatever is in his way is heartbreakingly adorable. But what really gets me is that the cat, having no concept of spacial awareness or even basic physics, is quite obviously attempting to put a piston into a pinhole, so to speak. HE JUST CAN'T FIT. The cardboard is remarkably resilient for not being shredded with the sheer kenetic energy of the feline.

I'm not even sure what the cat is trying to do, now that i look at it for an eighth time. Like, there's nothing inside the box...there's nothing on the other side of the box...he's literally just trying to tunnel through it and failing over and over again.

While I won't spoil the ending, obviously the highlight of the video is towards the end, where the cat rears up for a super croquette 2-wickets-in-a-row move and ends up with a new belt.

On a side note, this was attempted to be reproduced with Tux and an old style box, but it just wasn't happening.

Roomba Followup

Here's a follow up to the fantastic Roomba video featuring a modified vacuum with a cozy pad for the cat to sit upon as he rides his way around the room.

A few observations...

  • Japanese cats are amazing. and Japanese people love their cats, especially when they're doing funny or cute things.

  • Why is that room even being vacuumed? looks spotless. my guess is that they bought the roomba solely for the cat's pleasure.

  • If we can modify the device to enhance the cat's roomba-riding experience, what other things can we do to it? I'm thinking a straight up kitty playground on a roomba, or perhaps a covered one so that he can sleep whilst riding about.

Winter Cats

great night last night in cat land at 2508 frank. Turtle and Tux decided that the warmest place to sleep would be on my head (tux) or in the blankets under 2 comforters sleeping next to me (turtle). I was so excited i could barely sleep.

Ode To Tux: A Repost

I will be dedicating some posts to my own two cats, Tux and Turtle. This one comes first, as it's a repost from another blog, and serves as a good introduction to Tux. post is below...

This entry is dedicated to my cat, Tux. I was thinking about him recently, as I often do, and was trying to come up with a list of things that I really like about him. This list kept going! Tux is a great cat with a great personality that I think most other cats should strive for.

For those who think cats are stand-offish, or just generally rude, you haven't met Tux. Tux breaks the mold of the normal cat by being just about as friendly as a cat can be. In fact, some of his behavior is suspiciously dog-like in nature.

tux
This one's for you big fella.

For example, he likes to sit in the window overlooking our courtyard when we're not home and wait for us to return. If he's not there already, he'll run over whenever someone's opening the door downstairs to see who it is. When I get home from work, whether it's late or early, he's always right at the door waiting for me with his tail in the air. Well, almost always. sometimes he's just sleeping on the bed and gives me a "oh, you're home? i'm going back to sleep" look.

He also is a very dedicated shower guard. Nine times out of ten, when I am in the shower, he is in the bathroom with me, sitting on the sink. I'm not sure why he does this, but he does. He doesn't often sit on the sink at other times.

When we got our new cat, Turtle, he did not play the role of a jealous older sibling who would draw in marker all over his new baby brother's face. Actually, he was interested in her and wanted to play immediately. It didn't take long before they got along just great.

For a tough guy from the streets of Philadelphia, Tux really is a charmer. And, he's always dressed to kill in his medium-grey tuxedo, like 007. He absolutely loves guests, and when people sleep over, he tends to sleep on their bed or laps, perhaps to make them feel like they're part of the family. And when it's hot out, he has no shame in laying around on his back, spreadeagle.

While most cats can be described as shy, skittish, or even neurotic, I would nominate Tux for Cat of The Year if such an award existed.

Roomba

an epic vid that's been making the rounds lately:

a few observations:

  • His balance is impeccable.

  • He seems unafraid of this foreign object, unlike this guy here.

  • His tail is dragging BEHIND the roomba, thus negating (or perhaps working in parallel) to any vacuuming action the roomba may be performing

  • This may be the single greatest testimony for anyone, especially me to buy a roomba. If i can be guaranteed that Tux and Turtle would ride these things all day and all night, having fun AND cleaning the floor, i'd buy TWO in a second.

Feel free to discuss and add your own observations.

welcome

To me, cats are not just another animal to keep and say they're your own.

They're a way of life.

Why? I don't know. perhaps its their "uppity attitude" they exude, or perhaps the fact that they will cuddle and snuggle on their own terms only. Maybe it's because they warrant their own indoor "bathroom," thus changing living space dynamics. Maybe it's because they can really sense when you're down or need a friend. Maybe all of these reasons and more.

The goal of this blog is to reach out to the cat-community, and to present to them my observations, others observations, tips and tricks, and most of all, silly cat videos and photos. This is not a "i can haz cheezburger" blog or anything like that, but I will not discount contributions from such a website.

Look for more in the future.
